The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, March 6, 1915. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
The probable duration of the war is a subject of much speculation. By the most optimistic it is not considered probable that hostilities will cease before the spring oi next year, on the other hand, governments look for more prolonged hostilities. The British Budget was altogether indefinite in its proposals, Mr Lloyd George stating that the United Kingdom could provide financially for five years Irotn its outside investments alone. The Indian Government, in the financial statement officially states that its budget proposals “are based on the supposition that the war will last through 1915 and 1916,” In well informed circles it is considered that while victory may possibly be attained by the Allies within a year it is not thought improbable that it will require two years more to break down the obstinate resistance which Germany must be expected to make. Very much necessarily depends upon the forces which the Allies can bring into the field and upon the abundance ol their equipment and munitions. In any case, Germany and Austria have to be broken as military dictators ot Europe before any desirable peace is possible and this will make demands upon the Allies to a degree not yet generally realised.
