HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

The local Horticultural Society was unfortunate in experiencing very unfavourable weather for the Autumn Show, held in the Coronation Hall on Thursday and yesterday. The entries received were larger than those of the previous autumn show, and considering the bad season, the quality of the cut blooms, etc,, was very good, and it was anticipated that the exhibition would be a most successful one. The bad weather, however, upset these calculations, as it interfered to a great extent with the attendance of the public, the takings in this connection showing a large falling off when compared with previous exhibitions.

The show of pot plants was very good, some fine specimens being on exhiblliou. In the cut blooms section the entries, as far as numbeis were concerned, were good, but the quality of the blooms, although good, was not quite up to the standard ot those of previous shows, for which the unfavourable season experienced was responsible. Owing to Mr Wightou, one of the judges appointed, being prevented from attending, Mr A. J. Shailer was asked to fill the vacancy, iu addition to judging the sections for which he had been appointed. Mr Shailer kindly officiated, putting in a very strenuous time, and the Committee desire to extend to him their thanks for his services. Great interest was taken in the “Kaiser” competitions, and the committee that had the matter iu hand, Messrs Burgess, Claiis, and P. Robinson, were kept busy on both evenings, those present showing a great desire to have a shot at “William.” i

During the evenings, Mr Betty's orchestra played a number of selections, which were much appreciated. The following are the winners of the points prizes Pot plants, Miss Speirs ; cut blooms, Mrs Galland ; fruit, Mr VV. Nye ; vegetables, Mr P. VV. Brown ; farm produce, Mr G. Hughes ; cookery, Mrs C. Rand; home industries, Mrs C. Rand ; and decorative, Miss E. Newlh.

The receipts, outside of eutry fees, totalled is id, made up of: door takings 16s, sweets stall £2 15s id, tea-room £2 14s 6d, button-holes 2s qd, sheep guessing £2 ios, competitions £1 18s 3d, and sale of exhibits £\ 4s 6d.

The total amount received in eutry fees was £ll 6.1 qd, as compared with £6 93 qdat the autumn show last year. The difference is accounted for by the fact that on this occasion the fee was sixpence, as against three pence last year. The sheep guessing competition was won by Mrs F. Woods, who guessed the correct weight, 57 % pounds. PRIZE LIST. Pot Plants. —Points prize ss. Judge, Mr A. J, Shailer ; steward, Mr D, Wbibley.
