Bates wires today as follows: The indications are for variable and strong breezes, but southerly strong to gale prevailing after about ten hours; heavy rain is to be expected, with rivers rising shortly ; cold snap following. The barometer has a falling tendency, but rising shortly. Sea increasing to very heavy ; tides good.
