FIRE.
SIX-ROO.MF.D HOUSE AND CONTENTS DESTROYED. At about 9.50 yesterday morning a fire destroyed a six-rootned house in Coley Street, owned by Mr H. Coley aud occupied by Mr J. Collins aud family. The house was insured in the Northern office !or /ji6o. There was no insurance on the furniture aud effects, Mr Collins losing practically everything. The fire started in the kitchen. Mrs Collins at the time of the outbreak was engaged in the wash bouse, aud the first intimation she got of the conflagration was in seeing smoke and flames issuing from the door. Mr Powell, who happened to be passing at the time rendered what assistance he could, but the fire had too great a hold to salvage the contents of the house, even the linen aud clothes about to be washed were destroyed. Much sympathy is expressed for Mr and Mrs Collins in the misfortune which has befallen them.
CONFLAGRATION AT THE MAITAI FLAXMILL.
A fire occurred at Mr Gibbs’ Maital mill, Mouloa, at 11.30 yesterday morning, and but for the prompt action of the employees, aud the handiness of a chemical fire extinguisher, the mill and its contents would have been totally destroyed. The fife started behind the tow hole, and the flames instantly spread to the scutching shed. All hands quickly got to work, and after a strenuous but short lived fight the fire was got under. Mr Gibbs pays a very fine tribute to the employees ior the way they tackled the difficulty. The scutcher was badly damaged and other material destroyed. The loss is assessed at about ,£25.
