CHEMISTS AND THE SALE OF OPIUM.
At the Duuedin Police Court, Alfred Gudaille, chemist, appeared on a number of charges under the Opium Act, in the hearing of which the Crown stated that from April, 19x4, to 15th January last defendant had 1,069 pounds weight of opium, against the maximum of 20 pounds weight used by any other chemist in the city, and against 300 pounds weight used in one year by a wholesale firm. Gudaille pleaded guilty to three charges, which set forth that he bad purchased tor the purpose of sale or manufacture tincture of opium, and had disposed of it without entering particulars in. bis book. Defendant accounted for the sale by the statement that he had used the tincture for liniment, cough mixture, and a drench lor horses. Defendant contended that he had disposed of in the shop 26,000 bottles of cough mixture, and also sold 5,900 bottles of gripe drink, and 9,600 bottles of rheumatic liniment mixture. A penalty of was imposed on each of the three charges.
