A VISITOR’S IMPRESSIONS.

"Do yon mean to tell me that Foxton has not a water supply or drainage system with such a tine volume of water so near at hand ?” said a visitor.

We explained that while the river water would answer the purpose for sewerage or lire prevention purposes, it could not be used as a domestic source of supply which was of primary importance. We explained that the people relied upon the house tanks for domestic purposes which somewhat astonished our visitor. “But surely a town with a population of upwards of two thousand could stand a loan for water and drainage in older to conserve the health of the community. What rates do yeu pay ?”

We gave him an instance. “Why,” he said, “that’s more than I nay in New Plymouth with the added benefits that yon do not possess. Your rates are particularly stiff. What would a water and drainage scheme cost you ?”

Wc explained that the ratepayers had turned down a gravitation scheme from the Shannon hiils at £?)5> 000 - “I should think so 100. inat would impose a burden lar too heavy to be borne by such a small community. But, what about au artesian supply, that should be within vour means t’’

Upon this scheme being explained he expressed surprise that it had been turned down and ventured the opinion that the artesian was the only hope for Foxton in this respect unless it trebled its population. He concluded that Foxton was one of the heaviest rated boroughs with the minimum of conveniences that he had come across.
