ARMY TERMS EXPLAINED.
The following table shows roughly the size and contents of various British Army units. It should be pointed ont that the size of the larger units is not always the exact multiple of the smaller ones, owing to the inclusion of commanders, staff, or extra troops. INFANTRY. A Company contains 227 of all ranks. A Battalion contains four companies, or 1,007 of all ranks. A Brigade contains four battalions, or 4,055 of all ranks. A Division contains three brigades, with certain cavalry, artillery, engineer, medical and transport units, or 18,073 of all ranks. N.B. —The c'vdn'saho jof the Territorial Force v ’ -h----new armies is somewhat d'ffoie CAVAT”V. A squadron contains 15? cf ad ranks. Art ment contains three squadrons, 01 549 of all A Brigade, cllotie > -r alng part ot, a division, contains three legi-ncnts with a signal troop, or 1,7:3 of all ranks. A Brigr.de, not allotted to a Divis.ou, contains three regiments, “/it 1 - a horse artillery battery, an ammunition column, and engineer, signal and medical units, or 2,284 °f all ranks. A Division contains four cavalry brigades with certain horse artillery, engineer, signal, supply and medical units, or 9,269 of all ranks. FIELD ARTILLERY. A Battery contains 198 of all ranks. A Brigade contains three batteries and an ammunition column, or 795 of all ranks. horse artillery. A Battery contains 205 of all ranks. A Brigade contains two batteries and an ammunition column, or 681 of all ranks. FIELD HOWITZERS. A Battery contains 197 of all ranks. A Brigade contains three batteries and an ammunition column, or 755 of all ranks.
