A BUILDING RECORD.

NEW LIGHT CRUISER COMPLETED IN TEN MONTHS. An extraordinary feat of shipbuilding was announced by the Secretary of the Admiralty on 17th December, says the London Times —the new light cruiser Caroline was built by Messrs Cammell, Laird and Co., at Birkenhead, in ten months. Her keel was laid on 28th January, 1914, she was launched on 21st September, and was delivered complete on 17th December, after satisfactory trials on 15th December. The contract date for delivery was 21st May. 1915, or fifteen months after the laying of the keel. The Caroline, which belongs to the latest class of light cruiser, of which the famous Arethusa is an example, though a trifle smaller, is of 3,800 tons, 4201 t. long, and 39ft. beam, and armoured with a 3-inch belt. She is armed with two 6-inch and eight 4-inch guns of the latest type, firing a 31pound shot, and two torpedo tubes. Her contract speed is twenty-nine knots, and is probably equal to at least thirty knots at full power, and she, like the rest of the class, burns oil fuel. At least one or other ot the new group is either commissioned or nearly ready, and there are half a dozen more in various stages of completeness.
