NEW ZEALANDERS UNDER FIRE. TURKS ATTEMPT TO CROSS CANAL. REPULSED WITH HEAVY LOSS. London, February 4. The Turks on rafts attempted to cross the Canal at Toussoun on Wednesday. They were repulsed with heavy loss and 282 prisoners were taken. Two British officers and thirteen men were killed and fifty-eight wounded. The enemy was repulsed at K 1 Kantara, with tweuty-one killed and many wounded. Cairo, 4UI February. The enemy advanced on Toussoun at daybreak on Wednesday. Their artillery bombarded Toussoun and Serapeum. Our artillery and also the guns on the ships in the canal replied. The enemy, failing to cross the canal, retired at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Their casualties included eight officers killed. Six batteries aud 1200 Turks participated in the attack on K 1 Kantara. Twenty-five were made prisoner.

TWO NEW ZEALAND CASUALTIES. London, Feb. 4. Lieutenant-General Sir J. G. Maxwell, Commander of the Forces in Egypt, has cabled as follows to the New Zealand High Commissioner (the Hon, T. Mackenzie) : “The New Zealand infantry has been under tire at Suez Canal. “They earned the good opinion of all.

“The New Zealanders had two casualties. ’ ’

Yesterday morning Defence Headquarters In Wellington received information as to the two casualities referred to in the cable message. Both the wounded are Nelson men. and while one of them is dangerously wounded, the other’s injuries are only slight. The first is Sergeant A. J. Williams, whose number is 6/775. is slightly wounded in the shoulder. His next of kin is his father, of xg Pulford Street, Pimlico, London, S.W. The other is Private W. Ham, who has been dangerously wounded in the neck. He is a Motueka boy, and bis next of kin is Mr William Ernest Ham, of Motueka. JBoth men went with the Nelson Company of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment. The Hon. James Allen, Minister {or Defence, sent a message to Private Plam’s parents informing them of the nature of the casualty to their son.
