LOCAL AND GENERAL.
All accounts owing to the Hukai.d have now been rendered, and the proprietor would esteem as a favour an early settlement ol same. Accounts amounting to ,£571 12s 8d were passed for payment at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Borough Council. During last month 23 head of stock w'ere impounded by the borough ranger, the driving fees amounting to xys. The Inspector of Nuisances reported at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Borough Council that the borough is in a fairly satisfactory condition at present. There were, present at the ordinary monthly meeting of the Borough Council held on Tuesday night r The Mayor (Mr O. H. Stiles) and Crs Kempster, Read, Henderson, Chrystall, Coley, Freeman and Whibley. While travelling from Napier to Feilding a motor car containing four occupants, Messrs W. R. Clark (Feilding), T. P. Clark (Napier), and two ladies overturned at the bend of the Katuma road. The first named was pinned underneath and killed. The other occupants escaped with bruises. The accident is attributed to a defect in the steering gear. A local gentleman, who has ever taken a keen interest in the State school, has suggested to the chairman of committee, an upriver trip and picnic for the scholars and parents this year. The gentleman, who at present shall be nameless has offered to provide the means of locomotion free ot cost. The subject will be discussed by those interested at a later date. The resignation of Mr F, M. B. Fisher as a member of the Executive has been accepted by the Governor. The Departments formerly administered by Mr Fisher have been allotted as follows :—Electoral, the Prime Minister ; Customs and Marine, Hon. A. L. Herdmau; Insurance, Printing Office and Legislative, the Hon. W. Fraser; Pensions, the Hon. R, H. Rhodes. Gas was the chief topic at the meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday night, and this subject occupied by far the largest portion of the meeting. The discussion was of a desultory character, and after all the flow ot language on the part of councillors, the position at the finish was about the same as it would have been had the discussion not taken place. Gas consumers will now need to be careful that their accounts are not allowed to remain unpaid for more than two months, otherwise they will be forced to pay in advance for their gas per medium of a slot meter, it being decided at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Borough Council that slot meters be installed where the arrears of gas exceed two months. A petition against the election of Dr. McNab for the Hawke’s Bay seat was presented to the returning officer at Hastings yesterday morning. Mr Thomas Ecclesheld, an old and highly respected settler, was gored by a bull on his farm at Hawera on Tuesday afternoon. He died later from the injuries received. Tenders for the privileges (publican’s booths, gates, and hors paddock) at the local Racing Club’s forthcoming meeting, close with the secretary at noon tomorrow. By announcement on page three it will be seen that Collinson and Cunniugbame’s Colossal Summer Sale, starts on Tuesday January iytb. It is to last for only 14 days. In a few days time details of values offered will be given. Ensign and Mrs Jenkins, who have been appointed to take charge of the local corps of the Salvation Army, will be accorded a welcome in the Salvation Army Mall to night. The townspeople are cordially invited to be present. The Borough Band will render a number of selections at the hall. The Oueeu of the South, with general from Wellington, is due to-morrow. She will load hemp and sail for Wellington on Saturday, The Waverley, from Pupouga, and Kennedy from Greymouth, both coal laden, are due on Sunday, and the Awahou is expected on Tuesday from Wanganui to load hemp for Wellington. There was a very large and enthusiastic audience at the Municipal Pictures last evening to witness the glorious British drama “England’s Menace,” This film proved to be the star photo-play of the hour, being splendidly told and magnificently acted. The other items of the programme were up to their usual high standard. On Tuesday night the Borough Council went into committee to discuss matters in connection with the municipal pictures and also to deal with an application from the Town Clerk’s assistant for an increase in salary. On resuming business it was decided to run picture shows on Monday evenings as well as Wednesdays and Saturdays, and also to increase the salary of the Town Clerk’s assistant by ten shillings per week. A double drowning accident was 9 narrowly averted on afternoon by the promptitude and skill of a member of the Maori contingent at Avondale, Two boys aged about 10 years were bathing in the Whan Creek, Avondale, and got out of their depth. They had been under the water for a few seconds, when a young halfcaste Maori named Wells noticed their plight, and without a moment’s hesitation jumped in and pulled the boys out of the water. Two little Foxtoa girls, Misses Rene and Madge Barber, conceived the idea while on their holiday at Te Horo, to organise a little bazaar among their relatives, in aid of the Belgian Fund. Assisted by others, a splendid lot of articles of all sorts were made or secured, and the little function went off splendidly. As a result, no less than £2 was raised, and handed to The Otaki Mail, with a request that it be forwarded to assist the Belgian Relief Fund. Thoughtful, generous acts like these are much appreciated. A letter from the Superintendent of the State Guaranteed Advances Office was read at Friday night’s Council meeting in reply to a communication from the Council asking if the Office could advance the .£3,000 for gas works extension authorised by the ratepayers some time back. The Superintendent advised that gas works was not one of the authorised purposes lor which a local body could borrow money from the Advances Office, and therefore the application could not be entertained. In his report at Tuesday night’s Borough Council meeting, the manager of the gas works recommended the installation of controllers for the street lamps which would be operated from the.works, and would save the cost of a man to light and turn out the lamps at night- The cost of same would be £BS. —It was decided, on the motion of Cr Chrystall, seconded by Cr Coley, that the gas manager be instructed to draw up conditions in connection with fitting automatic lighters on street lampsWe are showing a splendid line of ladies “Equity” shoes, guaranteed quality, latest style. An English officer told French officers at mess that Kitchener, recently replying to a question as to when the war was going to end, replied: “I don’t know, but I know it’s going to begin in May.” The steel darts used by the aviators with the Allies, referred to several times in the cables, are an ounce in weight, and are discharged by dropping i,ooo at a time. Dropped from a height of 500 feet these darts will penetrate through a man and a horse. On Monday evening at about eight H. Hodge and his son were drowned while fishing off Te Horo beach. They were hauling in a net at the time, but it is unknown exactly bow the accident happened.” The body of the father was recovered but the sou is still missing.
