FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
REPORTS ADOPTED. At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council, held on Tuesday evening, the following reports were read and adopted : Town Clerk. “I beg to report that the Council’s road staff were employed as under during the past month, viz : Mixing asphalt in yard, fixing footpaths in Clyde and Park Streets, putting up concrete wall in Park street, cleaning track at Victoria Park, clearing- up triangle, cleaning water channels in Main street, and mowing grass in cemetery. “In connection with the Town Hall, I would recommend that the matter of giving way of picture nights to visiting companies should be left entirely to the Hall Manager’s discretion, as cases are often happening when I have to refuse the Hall to companies who cannot fit in any night other than thi.t of our pictures. “I beg to suggest that the Council pass a resolution that the gas be cut off from any consumer who has an ordinary meter and is owing two months’ arrears, and a slot meter be installed.” Gas Committee. A meeting of the Gas Works Committee was held in the Council Chambers on December 21st, 1914. Present: His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors G. Whibley, J. Chrystall, T. Henderson, G. Coley, A. Speirs, and the Gas Works Manager, who was present by invitation. The matter of granting the application of Mr A. Ruback for a holiday was discussed, and it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Coley, that Mr Ruback be given a week’s holiday on full pay. The Town Clerk submitted a letter from the secretary of the Wellington Gas Co., Ltd., relative to an expert visiting Foxton to give a gas-cooking demonstration. The communication stated that Miss Carter, the Company’s expert, could come on the following terms, viz,, one guinea per day, plus board and travelling expenses to and from Wellington, It was resolved, on the motion of Cr Coley, seconded by Cr Speirs, that Miss Carter be engaged for six days. The Town Clerk was directed to take steps to ascertain if the Government would advance the ,£3,000 loan as authorised by the ratepayers in June last for the gas works extension. Reserves Committee. A meeting of the Reserves Committee was held on December 18th, 1914. Present: His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Coley, Barber, Read, Kempster and Freeman. The Committee first visited the Pound Reserve. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr Read, seconded by Cr Barber, that the Town Clerk employ Air L- Wilson to erect a new shed at the pound and repair the fence, which shall have two barb wires. The Committee afterwards visited Victoria Park, and the following works were authorised, viz., all the grass round the outside ol the track to be cut, and a new iron convenience tor gentlemen to be erecled. The Town Clerk was authorised to purchase a new roller for use in the Park, etc. Treasurer. I have to report that the following amount has been received since last meeting and placed to credit, viz., tor the district fund account £363 6s Sd. The positions ot the accounts at the Bank of New Zealand are : District fund account cr £466 13s Bd, and cemetery account cr £2 4s gd. The various ledger balances are as under: Cemetery £2 4s gd, contractors’ deposits £4, gas works £668 2s, Whirokino bridge loan £l9 2s 3d, roads and streets loan £72 17s 4d, Shannon bridge loan £l7 12s 3d, council chamber and public library loan £7 12s gd, Whirokino bridge additions loan £7 9s rod, roads and streets loan No. 2 £26 19s 3d, reserves £154 17s 3d, sanitation £133 IS id, town hall pictures £74 os Bd, all in credit, a total of £llBB. The accounts at debit are : General £24 16s Bd, gas works loan £292 19s 3d, beach road loan £9 osßd, library ns6d, and town hall £4xß os xod, which with Imprest cash £lO makes a total of £755 8s 1 id. Gas Works, The amount ot gas manufactured during the month of December was 317,900 ft, which with the amount in holder on December Ist, 5,500tt. made a total of 323,400 ft, The amount sold to consumers was (lighting) 147,10011,, (cooking and healing) 68.200 ft., (power) 40.600 ft., used in street lamps 30,000 ft., used in works 2i,0001t., and there was an amount of 4,000 ft in holder on January Ist, leaving 12,500 ft, equaling four per cent of the output, unaccounted for. Twenty eight tons of coai was carbonised, yielding 11,300 ft. per ton. The earnings totalled £l4B 18s 2d, made up ot gas sales (lighting) £79 JQS sd, (heat and power) £3O 14s Bd, meter rent 15s, coke sales £l3 5s id, tar sales £8 17s, fitting account £ls 7s. The expenditure was was as follows: Coal £34 6s, salaries and wages £42 us Sd, labour on plant £4 Bs, pipes (services) 18s 6d, pipes (mains) ss, fittings £8 17s 3d, tools 4s 3d, working expenses £3 15s, engine repairs and oil 4s, interest and sinking fund £59 1 is Bd, totalling &SS is 4d.
