What a boon it would be to weary travellers journeying between Auckland and New Plymouth and Wellington to have the distance shortened between Marton or Greatford and Levin by linking up the line between the above-mentioned places. Not only would the shortening of the distance be appreciated by the travelling public, but the saving to the State would be enormous. The only protest to such a necessity comes from Palmerston, whose parochial objections would soon be outed if the people interested locally and north and south took the matter up. Mr Edward Newman, M.P. lor Rangitikei, hit the nail on the head when be stated in reference to this matter that the people most interested must keep on agitating. The only way to win in such matters is by persistency, for without this backing up public men slacken effort. The most persistent must be placated. Is Palmerston’s parochial persistency of obstruction to stand in the way of a work of national importance ? A railway l£>rgb e should be formed throughout this and the adjoining districts, and a backing .obtained in all the lead-

ing centres trom Wellington to Auckland, and along this coast to New Plymouth. Now is the time to strike, and we urge the local bodies to move In the matter.
