ENTERTAINMENTS.
ROYAL PICTURES. The programme at the Royal to night (and Saturday’s matinee) will take the form of a special •Christmas number, and will be headed by the star item, ‘‘The Beetles’ Christmas in the Forest. Another lengthy item will be a stirrying story entitled, The Vortex,” and will be supported by a good variety of other interesting films. The programme advertised for Saturday night’s entertainment is a very good one, being composed of films of a most interesting nature. The star attraction, “When Conscience Calls,” is a production worthy of the popular Lubin Company, and is a romance telling both of the city and the ranch, and is said to be a dramatic story of the actions of a deep-dyed villian and the ultimate awakening of the scoundrel’s conscience. The supporting films consist of the ever popular, and at the present time specially interesting, Topical Budget; a big star patriotic film, ‘‘Europe in Peace and War,” a film production showing the fighting forces engaged in the titanic war struggle on the Continent; a Pathe film of exceptional interest ; a Vitagraph and Kalem laughter-raising item; a “Chic” human emotional play, “UnmeritedJShame.” The special film secured for Monday and Tuesday next is a 5,000 feet war picture, “Victory,” in the production of which the United States Navy played a leading part, and Uncle Sam’s naval officials appear.
MUNICIPAL, PICTURES. The programme for to-night is an extra attractive one, being a special holiday selection. The star drama, “The Treasure Ship,’’ tells an engrossing story packed with incidents concerning the lives of those who go down to the sea in ships. The other items of the programme are : “Lite’s Lottery,’’ drama ; “Topical War Budget’’ ; “The Little Sheriff,” drama; “One Touch of Nature,” comedy ; “He Was Bad,’’ comic ; “The Great Toe Mystery,” comic, For Saturday (Boxing Night) another first class programme has been arranged. The star drama, “An Officer and a Gentleman,” is a great Vitagraph success and is a big dramatic special. A tremendously strong story of love and intrigue ; a military play with a society setting. A most exciting series of episodes centre round the murder of Captain Sutherland, the wrongful arrest of the hero, a most dramatic incident in the court at the trial, and the ultimate confession of the guilty one and the triumph of innocence. It is magnificently acted by the well-known Vitagraph Co. The other items' will be: “Australian Gazette,” topical; “The Conductor’s Courtship,” comedy drama ; “Mexican War Pictures,” war topical; “Orphans of the Wild,” drama ; “Oh, Those Relatives,” comic; “Feats of Strength,” vaudeville Dwarf trio; “Outwitting Dad,” comic; and last but not least will be a special war film, “The Defence of Alost,” which will be well worth seeing.
