Only one Oppositionist was returned to Parliament along this coast, namely Mr Veitch (Wanganui), representing Labour, The other members returned were Messrs Field (Otaki), Buick (Palmerston), Guthrie (Oroua), Ed. Newman (Rangitikei), Pearcfe (Patea), Hine (Stratford), Wilkinson (Egmont), and Okey (Taranaki). If Mr Massey had to go to the country again, we believe the Reform vote along this coast would be increased. In conversation with a Wardist supporter in this electorate, we were informed that fully threefourths of the Opposition votes were cast for Mr Robertson, not because they agreed with this candidate politically, but for the sake of assisting Sir Joseph Ward to office. He said he, with many others, would not again cast his vote for a Social Democrat if the Liberals would not put up an official candidate. If an agreement bad been entered into, the late election was the end of it, at least so far as he was concerned. It is quality that makes a bargain.
