The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, December 10, 1914. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

“Seeing that Mr Field is in favour of the freehold on the land question, is he also in favour of the worker being granted the freehold of his job ?” was a question asked Mr Field at Tuesday night’s meeting. The candidate said he was not in favour of amending the law in that direction. The law already provides that every man shall have the right to work, and there is plenty of employment in this country for honest and efficient workers. There are some men, however, who don’t want to work, but prefer to exist, like parasites, on the mental and physical exertions of others. They are not fit even to be classed as drones—which insect possesses the saving grace of keeping the hive warm. These growlers and agitators are almost invariably the inefficient in every branch of industry, and are generally paid twice as much as they are worth.
