LANDS FOR SETTLEMENT.
An interesting fact concerning the land policy of the Ward Govern mement was pointed out by Sir Walter Buchanan in a recent speech. He stated that the Ward Government had been voted ,£500,000 per year for the purpose of acquiring land for settlement. When the Reform Government came to office it found that over £600,000 of the amount voted to Sir Joseph Ward had been unexpended, The present Government had also been voted ,£500,000 per annum, and it had expendeg every penny of it in purchasind land, with the exception of £ll,500. In addition to this, the Reform Government devoted the whole of the proceeds from the sale of Crown lands to the acquisition of further land for settlement. The Ward Government paid this revenue into the consolidated fund and this helped to swell the surpluses.
Sir Walter Buphapan, who is one of the large landowners who are ever being represented as opposed to extra land taxation, stated that he favoured the proposal of Mr Massey to increase the graduated land tax.
