WAR NEWS.
The enemy’s artillery activity has increased on the northern front, especially between the sea and the Dys. The Algerians repulsed the enemy near Tracyleval and regained ground previously lost. The Germans lost heavily. The Allies maintained their positions in the Argonne.
The correspondent of “The Times” in West Flanders states that the impression of officers and men from the trenches is that the fury of the German attack has spent itself.
The British heavy guns are doing great execution, while the German guns are said to be considerably the worse for wear, and their ammunition impotent through its bad quality. The Russians surprised the Goebeu and Breslau on Wednesday last. Several explosions occurred on the Goebeu and she disappeared, aflame, in a mist. The Breslau did not wait to fight.
A British force on the Shat-el-Arab, Persian Gulf, routed, a force of Turks, inflicting heavy losses.
In South Africa a further remnant of Beyers’ commando has been captured.
