In West Flanders the battle has been resumed with great violence, the enemy making enormous efforts to reach the coast. The Germans violently bombarded Nieuport, Dixmude and Ypres. Artillery fire prevented the German completing works south of Dixmude to prevent.inundation, and their trenches were flooded, causing their evacuation.
German attacks south of Bixschoote and Ypres failed, and the Allies have progressed between Bixschoote and the Yser Canal., 1 Germans endeavouring to cross the Aisne river, near Vailly, were destroyed or repulsed. In the Argonne the Allies exploded a number of German trenches by means of mines, and advanced at several points south of Verdun.
The Daily Mail records that the Germans lost 100,000 men in four days’ fighting at Ypres.
From Vienna advices record that part of Cracow is invested and ablaze, and that the inhabitants are fleeing. An official message from Petrograd states that the retreating Germans destroyed railways and bridges wholesale, greatly delaying the Russian pursuit, as they neared their own territory. A battle on a large scale is proceeding between the Vistula and the Warta, the Germans being in great force. Two sharp actions have been fought in the Persian Gulf, the enemy being defeated with heavy losses.
In South Africa, it is reported that De Wet has been wounded, anb that his influence is waning. His commando is short of ammunition.
The Italian Ambassadors to Great Britain, Austria and other leading Powers have been summoned to Rome for a personal consultation with the King and his Ministers.
