THE GAS WORKS.
During the month of October the amount of gas manufactured at the local gas works was 321,100 ft., which with the amount in holder on October Ist, 6oooit. made a total ot 327,100 ft. The amount used by consumers was 133,300 ft. lor lighting, 65,600 ft for cooking and heating and 36,400 ft. for power, 3,000 ft. was used in the street lamps, 22,800 ft. in the v.o’ks, and there was 5,000 ft. In holder on November Ist, meters not read 2,000 ft., leaving 12,000 ft, (equalling 2>-A P er cent.) unaccounted for. The coal carbonised was 28 tons, yielding 11,500 ft. per ton. The earnings amounted to 3 s ?d, made up of gas sales (lighting) ,£B7 5s 7d, (heat and power) 15s 6d, weighing 18s 6d, fitting account £$ 19s Bd, coal £2 2s, services ,£3 6s 6d, and labour or services ,£3. The expenditure was as Jollows : —coal ,£34 6s, salaries and wages ,£3+ 17s 4d, labour £2O 12s 6d, fittings £66 14s nd, printing and advertising ,£3 15s 6d, engine repairs and oil 9s, miscellaneous £2 10s, interest and sinking fund ,£59 1 is Bd, a total of £222 16s nd.
A letter was read from the gas manager recommending that certain street lamps which at present were on the roadway, and were a source of danger be removed to a safer position, also that a lamp be erected at the corner of Cook and Fulter Streets as promised some time ago.—lt was decided on the motion of Crs Barber and Whibley, that the lamps mentioned by the gas manager as being a danger to the travelling public be moved to safe positions with the exception of the one at the corner of Park Street and Lady’s Mile, and that the lamp applied for at the corner of Cook and Fuller Streets be erected.
