FOXTON FLORAL CARNIVAL.
IN AID OF BELGIAN RELIEF FUND. A meeting ot ladies, convened by Mesdames Gower, C. F. Johnston and Healey was held in the Coronation Town Hall supperroom on Saturday afternoon, to discuss ways and means of a combined local effort to assist the Belgian Relief Fund. There was a good attendance of ladies, and Mrs Johnston occupied the chair. Several efforts were suggested namely, a children’s ball, picture entertainment and floral fete. There was plenty of enthusiasm but differences, of opinion. Finally the floral fete found favour with the majority and it was decided to hold the affair on the racecourse-provided the Racing Club consented to the use- of the grounds, and the date was faxed for Wednesday week, rS'-h lust. Special committees were forthwith appointed and they lost no time in giving attention to the details connected with the departments they are responsible for. ihe following are the committees set up : Tea and refreshment rooms, Mrs J. Robinson and assistants ; sweet stall, Mesdames Seabury, Gower, Boyes, Ladd and assistants ; flower stall, Mesdames A. S. liaslou, Signal and assistants ; produce stall, Mesdames John Robinson, C. Robinson, Jenks, Admore, Newth and Hillman; may pole, Mrs Hornblow and assistants; bran tub, Miss lan Robinson ; competition committee, Mesdames Johnston, F. Robinson, • Phillips, Healey, J. Barber, Raine, Kellow, Moore, Mandl, A. Ross, Nye and Miss Spiers. Mrs Kerr-Hislop was appointed secietary. It was decided lo call a faither meeting and enlist the sympathy of the male portion of the community. A further meeting was held in the Council Chambers last night at 7 o’clock. The attendance over-crowded the Mayor’s room and the. Council Chamber was placed at the disposal of the meeting- The Mayor occupied the chair and briefly referred to what the ladies had done. As there was still a diversity of opinion as to the place where the effort should be held, the matter was again thrown open lor discussion. It was decided to hold the floral fete and carnival on the racecourse as previously decided and in the event of the weather being unpropilious to engage the Town Hall. It was decided to ask the Council to give a picture entertainment in the evening. At this juncture the meeting adjourned to All Saints' schoolroom in order to allow the Council to go on with its meeting. Mr Hornblow was voted to the chair and a considerable amount of detail work was transacted. Mr W. E. Barber, vice president of the Racing Club, said he had no doubt the club would grant the use ol the racecourse etc., provided the grounds were left in the same condition as they found them. It was decided to open with a procession leaving the south end of Main Street at 12 30 p.m. Mr Kirkly assisted by Mr Boyes to be marshal.
It was decided to ask the shopkeepers lo close on the date at 12 noon.
Mr Kellow was appointed to arrange for the services of the Borough Band and Weraroa Stale Farm Boys Band. Admission to the grounds was fixed at: Adults 6d, and children 3d. The Rev W. Raiue was elected joint secretary with Mrs KerrHislop and Mr Bell treasurer. It was unanimously decided to have a juvenile carnival queen contest for girls under 10 years ot age. Nominations to close to morrow (Wednesday) at noon at Mr Fraser’s office (above Mrs Teviotdale’s). The number of candidates to be restricted to five. The five candidates to be selected by lot. Votes to be 3d each. The voting to close on Monday at 6 p.m. at the HkrAi,d Office, where ballot boxes will be provided lor the several candidates. The scrutineers appointed being Messrs Phillips and Bellwbo, with Mr Fraser supervising, will start to count the votes at 7 p.m. Mr Fraser was appointed to manage the contest. Mrs Johnston undertook to provide a crown
for the queen and it was decided to award prizes to each candidate, which were donated in the room. Messrs W. Is. Barber and G. T, Woodroofe donated a live and dressed sfieep respectively for guessing competitions. Guesses to be charge! 6d each. Mr Bell will take charge of this competition. It was decided to have a baby show, Dr. Kerr-Hislop to officiate as judge, Mr Kelly was appointed to arrange for tradesmen’s decorated carts and Mr F. Robinson to act in similar capacity in respect of decorated flax drays, Mr P. Lumsdeu to have charge of the shooting gallery, kindly loaned by the Shannon Druids through the good office of Mr Kellow. Mr Kellow offered to hoop-la table. Mr Kelly to provide gipsy fortune-telling tent. The following gentleman were appointed a sports committee : Messrs Claris (convenor), Kellow, S. Austin, Hornblow, Kelly, with
Mr W. E. Barber as judge. It was decided to have a competition tor children’s decorated ponies, Mr H. Coley as judge. Arrangements for decorated motor cars, motor bicycles and ordinary bicycles were left in the hands of, Messrs Simmons and Munro. The entry fees for cars and motor bicycles is, push bikes 6d. Entry fees for other competitions are, adults 6d. children 3d. All entries for competitions to be made on the ground. Other matters of detail were discussed and it was decided to hold a futther meeting of all interested in All Saints' schoolroom on Thursday next at 7.30 p.m.
