LECTURE BY MR. POYNTON,S.M.

MASONIC HALL, TO NIGHT.

Mr J. W. Poyuton, S.M., will deliver a lecture in the Masonic Hall to night, at 8 o’clock, on the subject of Bacteriology. The lecture was to be given primarily to the senior scholars of the local State school, but it was decided to hire a hall and throw the lecture open to the public. Admission will be free. The following is a synopsis of the lecture : Nature of Bacteria ; their place in Nature’s scheme; man’s best friends in many ways ; different kinds, illustrated ; disease germs ; Pasteur’s and Koch’s great discoveries; the bacilli of consump tion and typhoid, illustrated; antitoxins ; use of antiseptics ; modern surgical triumphs ; malaria, yellow fever, sleeping sickness, plague ; mystery of immunity; phagocytes ; Metchnikoff’s researches. Tubes of bacillus Bulgaricus will be exhibited. This is the bacillus that Metchnikoff believes will postpone old age. It will be supplied to any of the audience desiring to experiment with it. They should bring small, properly cleaned bottles to contain the culture.

The subject Is of interest and mportance to every one, and has a direct bearing on hygiene and morality. Mr Poynton will answer questions.
