following losses of warships have been sustained by Britain and Germany : BRITAIN. August 6th. Scout-cruiser Amphion, 3,440 tons, ten 4-inch guns ; sunk by mine near the Thames ; 120 lives lost. September 3rd. —Torpedo-gun-boat Speedy, Bxo tons, two 4.7inoh guns ; blown up by a mine off the east coast of England. September sth. —Protected scout Pathfinder, 2,940 tons, nine 4-inch guns ; sunk by German submarine off English east coast. Heavy loss of life. September 9th. Merchantcruiser Oceanic (White Star liner), 17,274 tons ; wrecked on the north coast of Scotland, September 19th. Australian submarine AEx, lost with all hands. September 20th, —• Third-class cruiser Pegasus, 2,135 tons, eight 4-inch guns ; disabled at Zanzibar by German cruiser Koenigsberg. September 22nd. —• Armoured cruisers Cressy, Aboukir, and Hogue, each 12,000 tons, two 9.2inch, twelve 6-incb, twelve smaller guns ; sunk in the North Sea by German submarines. October 17th. —Cruiser Hawke, 7,350 tons, two 9,2-inch, ten 6incb, seventeen smaller guns; sunk in North Sea by German submarines. GERMANY. August sth. —Mine-layer Konigin Luise, 1,800 tons; sunk off the Thames by destroyer Lance. August Bth (about), —Submarine Uls, Soo tons (?) sunk by cruiser Birmingham. August 20th chant-cruiser Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, 14,349 tons; sunk by cruiser Highflyer, south of Canary Islands. August. 27th. —Cruiser Magdeburg, 4,500 tons, twelve 4.1-inch guns; wrecked on Odensholm Island, Gulf of Finland, under fire ot Russian ships. I August 28th. —Battle of Heligo- • land Bight. Cruisers Ariadne, 2,618 tons, ten 4.1-iDch guns ; Koln, 4,280 tons, twelve 4.1-inch guns; and Mainz, 4,232 tons, twelve 4.1-inch guns, and two torpedo craft sunk; others damaged. September sth. Submarine which sank H.M.S. Pathfinder reported sunk. September 14th. Merchantcruiser Cap Tfalgar, 1,710 tons; sunk by British auxiliary cruiser Carmania, off South American coast. September 15th. Cruiser Hela, 2,040 tons, ten small guns; sunk by British submarine. September aaqd. Two submarines which sank Cressy, Aboukir and Hogue sunk in North Sea, October xst. —Destroyer sunk at Tsingtao by forts. October 4th. —Destroyer 5126, 420 tons, sunk in the river Ems by British submarines. October yth.-r-Cruiser Cormoran r,630 tons, eight 4.r-inch guns, and two gunboats reported sunk at Kiao-cbau. Unconfirmed. October roth.—Two submarines reported sunk in the Baltic Sea by Russian cruisers. Unconfirmed. October 15th. — Submarine reported sunk by British destroyer. Unconfirmed. October 17 th.—Four destroyers sunk off Dutch coast by British cruiser and destroyers.
