PRONUNCIATION OF FRENCH NAMES.

The war will increase the geographical knowledge of the “man in the street” ; yet he will sometimes be puzzled as to the pronunciation of the names of places in France or Germany. He does not want to be pedantic; and he knows that in process of time the names of these places will be Anglicised. Who but a pedant would call Paris “Paree” ! But, still, it is useful to know how the names of French places which appear in our newspapers every day should be pronounced, and we give some examples which may help : > Vise —Wahze. Meaux—Mo. La Ferte sous Jouarre —L® Faiity soo Jooar. Soissons—Swasong. Ourcq—Ourk. Amiens—Ahmeeong. Charleroi—Shark wa. Dinant—Deenong. . Liege—Leeage. Mezieres —Mezeeair, Epernay—Aypairnay. Chalons—Shallong. Vitry le Francais—Veetray le Frongsay. River Aube—Ohbe. Verdun—Vairdin. Luneville—Loonveal. Nogenl—Knowjohn. Longwy—Longvey. Maubeuge—Mohbuzh Lille —Leel. Ghent —Gong.
