LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Canadian overseas forces will be brought to xoo, ooo. Commenting on this decision, the Daily Star says that, as the recruiting in Britain proceeds, the menace of the war is more recognised in Canada. The committee recently organised in Rangiotu have collected Rangitane and Bainesse districts in aid of the sufferers by the Huutly mining disaster. The appeal for assistance was readily responded to by the Jflaxmill hands, who contributed liberally to the fund. In reply to an interjection in the House, Mr Massey said ; “I neither believe in hereditary lords nor hereditary titles. Don’t let there be any mistake about that.” MrAtraore: ‘‘l think you are after one.” Mr Massey : “ You can bet against it and you will be quite sate.”

At the annual meeting of the Foxton Racing Club on Tuesday night, the president, Mr J. R. Whyte, made feeling reference to the loss sustained through the death of Mr Messena, who had for a number of years been caretaker of the Foxton racecourse.. He said the late Mr Messena was known as a straight going sportsman, and was loved by all with whom he came in contact. For furniture we can give you a quote for cash that will open your eyes. An absolute saving of onehird the cost seems good doesn’t it ? An enquiry costs you nothing. Walker and Furrie.*

Mr A. W. Hogg is oat for the Mastertou seat agatust the man who beat him three years ago, Mr Sykes, The Japanese Government has offered to provide the British and French armies with a special kind of paper convertible into warm winter clothing, which is worn by the Japanese soldiers with satisfactory results. Referring to the war, Mrs Philip Snowden says she refuses to listen to the man or woman who condemns the whole German nation as responsible for the war. She knew the rank and file of Germany, and believed that they no more wanted the war than the most peaceful man or woman in her audience. It was Kaiserism, militarism, beaurocracy, anti-social and out-of-date systems that were responsible. At Martou Court on Tuesday morning, before a Justice of the Peace, C. R. Cooke, late secretary of the Marton Farmers’ Union, was charged with failing to account for the following moneys : Due to the Wellington Meat Export Co., 7s nd; to the Wanganui Meat Co., 6s 3d ; Gear Meat Preserving Co., £l6 16s 8d ; R. In the Catholic schoolroom last night Miss Heunessy, who with her father is leaving Foxtou to take up their residence in Shannon, was farewelled by church member« and made the recipient of a presentation of a case of silver toilet ware from the choir, of which she had been a member for a number of years. Mr J. Golder, choirmaster, presided, and made the presentation. In doing so he referred to the assistance rendered by Miss Hennessy to the choir, and said the position occupied by her would be very bard to fill. She would be missed by all members of the congregation and particularly by the sick of the parish, to whom she was always a frequent visitor. Mr Heunessy responded on behalf of his daughter. At the annual meeting of the Foxton Racing Club on Tuesday night, when nominations for the position of president were [invited, the retiring president, Mr J. R. who has now occupied the position for some years, said that perhaps it would be better to have a president who was resident in the district. Dr. Mandl said that he did not think the club could do better than re-elect Mr Whyte, who had had a very long connection with the club and whose knowledge of racing had stood them in good stead. He had much pleasure in proposing Mr Whyte for re-election. The motion was seconded and carried unanimously. “The Prisoner of Zenda,” an elaborately mounted and well produced film, was screened as the star item at The Royal last night, and was appreciated by a good audience. The picture is notable for the fine acting of the leading characters, especially that of James K. Hackett, who carried out the dual role of King Rudolf and Rudolf Bassendyll (a soldier of fortune) and also the pleasant grouping and arrangement of the principal scenes, more especially the coronation scene. The supporting films were of an interesting nature, aud combined to make an excellent programme.

It is stated that the Germans employed two hundred guns of 28, 30 and 42 centimetres in the bombardment of Antwerp. These were probably howitzers specially constructed by Krupps for the bombardment of Paris. They are enormous! y heavy guns of nin., i2in., and i6in., firing 6751 b., 8501 b and 20ooIb shells respectively. The largest field howitzer of which particulars are given in the British Ordnance tables is the nin weapon firing a shell of 7581 b. The weight of this howitzer is nearly sis tons, so that the largest of the German howitzers weighs with its full equipment, something like fifteen tons. The cable messages have referred to French “75 centimetre guns” as having caused frightful carnage in the German trenches. This is obviously incorrect, as the measurement given is inches, which would represent the calibre of a gun firing a shell of over i6,0001b. The gun referred to is doubtless the deadly 75 millimetre gun. During last month the amount of gas manufactured at the local works was 327.100 ft., which with amount iu holder on September Ist, 7000 ft., made a total of 334,000 ft. Twenty eight tons of coal was carbonised, yielding 11,600 ft. per ton. The earnings totalled ,£162 18s id, made up of gas sales (lighting) 4s 46, (heat and power) las lod, Coke sales £2 2s 3d, tar sales £7 10s, weighing 12s 6d, and fitting account £3 16s 2d. The monthly meeting of the school committee will be held this evening. The Queen of the South sailed at s o’clock this morning for Wellington and is due bark on Saturday morning. The Wootton, with general from Lyttelton, is expected on Monday. Major G. S. Richards, who is on the New Zealand Staff Corps, participated in the defence of Antwerp, and has returned to London. It has been definitely decided to start the reinforcements camp at Trentham on the 21st inst. The troops to be concentrated there will be drawn from all parts of New Zealand.

The picture programme secured by the Borough Council for the school entertainment to-morrow night is a particularly attractive one and should appeal to humour of both old and young. It has been published in England that General Alexander Godley is to take command of the Australian and New Zealand Expeditionary Forces. It is also stated in Australia that he will be in command of the combined force.

Dealing with the grant of £5 recently made by the Borough Council to the School Committee for metal received, we wish to do justice to the Mayor by stating that while this matter was omitted to be explained at last Council meeting it had been clearly set out by the Mayor at a previous meeting, and also, the quotation “the best end of the stick” was our own and not the Mayor’s. The Mayor, however, at the time the grant was made, and now, is of the opinion that the. Committee were well entitled to the grant. Now is the time.
