ITALIAN-AUSTRIAN CRISIS; The German armies in France have been heavily reinforced during the last ten days. There is evidence that there are 1.500.000 Germans now engaged in the west, the greater part of them available for offensive operations. The Allies still retain marked numerical superiority. The conflict now developing in the north-west of France is expected to end in the Allies’ advantage. A message from London states that the Germans have occupied Lille, while a Calais report received earlier declarer that Germans are concentrating in large numbers. The'same report remarks that the enemy’s main body is retreating north and north-east. The latest official communique reports that the Allies’ left has resumed the offensive against the enemy’s cavalry at Hazebrouck and Bethune, while progress has been made at other points. A fierce battle with General von Kluck’s right tried to cut the Allies’ lines ended in the frustration of the general’s attempt. The Belgian Government has left Ostend for Havre, and following their departure, there has been an enormous exodus of the Ostend population. Some of the Antwerp forts are reported to be still holding out. Mr Churchill paid a visit to the stricken city. It is recorded that 5000 of the British contingent has returned to England. The Russian cavalry has crossed some of the Carpathian passes and are descending to the great plains of Hungary. The siege of Przemysl has been raised, and the Russians are preparing for a big fight against the Austro-German forces. Berlin denies the Russian victories at Augustovand Suwalki. The tension between Austria and Italy has become acute. It appears that active hostilities may break out at any moment. In Morocco Austrians and Germans are to be courtmartialled tor arming the natives and inciting them to assassination. The Montenegrins engaged 15.000 Austrians uoth-east of Serajevo. The Austrians were defeated, losing 2500. The Montenegrin losses were 300, including two generals wounded.
