DEBATING SOCIETY.
Tbe Literary and Debating Society dosed the session for tbe year last night, when a wellattended and enthusiastic meeting was held. A short debate was held on the question of “Is prohibition the correct solution of the liquor problem?” an apparently heavy subject, which was, however, treated in a light and humorous manner by the speakers, and wholly enjoyed by those present. The leaders were Mr Hornblow (for prohibition) and Mr Hamilton (against)- The vote taken on the question decided the weight of evidence proved prohibition the correct way of dealing with the matter. A programme of vocal items were subsequently contributed by Miss Signal and Messrs Chrystall, Claris, Hornblow, and Rev Mashn, apprecL.ioO of which was shown by tbe hearty applause following each item. A competition held during supper interval created much amusement, and on the decision ot judges appointed, the honour of first place was awarded to Mr Ten. Daniel. Tbe meeting throughout was of a jolly and sociable nature, and was a satisfactory ending to a successful session.
Reference was made by several members to the success of the society since its inception, and emphasised the advantages derived from its influence by those who had attended, although the session had necessarily been somewhat short. Special mention was made ot the way Mr G. Daniel had carried out tbe secretarial duties, and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The hope was expressed that next winter tbe meetings would be continued as successfully as those just closed.
