MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held at Shannon on Tuesday. Present : Messrs Wilson (chairman), Phillips, Hunt, Barber and Penny. r.ENKKAI, MATTERS, Owing to the complications in Europe the Public Trustee regretfully declined to advance the Council to build a workman’s cottage. To examine and discuss the erosion taking place at Shannon bridge, a meeting of representatives of the Horowhenua and Manawatu County Councils and Foxton Borough Council is to be arranged. Cr McKenzie wrote forwarding a letter for Mr E. Newman, M.P., suggesting a conference of local bodies to discuss the Local Railways Bill. —The conference will be held on the 12th inst. An agreement having been made with the Railway Department fora private siding at Himatangi, the chairman and Cr Hunt were authorised to sign it. treasurer’s report. The Treasurer reported : General account, dr. £37SI 9 s yd ; loan account cr. 2s 8d ; net dr. balance, £sS5 2 6s nd. Riding accounts, available for expenditure. —Saudon 123 rod, Mt. Stewart .£lB2 2s 2d, Waitohi £127 13s rod, Rongotea ;£xSB 12s lod, Carnarvon 2s 3d, Kawa Kawa 16s 2d, Over-expended ; Awahou, ,£xy 9s 9d, overseer’s report. The overseer reported on the Awahou Riding as follows: — Good progress is being made with the cutting and formation work on Wilson’s road, and we expect to have this work completed in two weeks’ time. Mr Bock wrote requesting me to put in three culverts on the road along the Government drain. The cost of putting in the three culverts will be about £ls. TRAM WAV. The Tramway manager reported that the traffic was not large and the accounts show a debit balance of os rod lor the month. Unless the volume of traffic offering improves the advisability of curtailing the present running should be considered. The driver complains that ratepayers along the line, or their employees, are using the tram line for a dumping ground for waste material from fences after repairing same. On several occasions pieces of broken posts, etc., have been thrown on to the line. Recently the tram ran into a piece of wood on the line near Makowhai, and the engine had to be laid up next day to repair the spring gear, new pins having to be made. It was decided to reduce the running of the tram to three days a week.
