An official report from Paris states that some progress has been made in the Berryaubac district ; a slight advance has been made north of Soissons ; while, between the Somme and the Oise there have been alternate advances and retirements. Near Eassigny the Germans attacked in strength; but the attack tailed. The front is extending more on the Allies’ left wing, Earge masses of the enemy’s cavalry and other forces are moving through the district north of Roubaix. From Belguim it is reported, that King Albert is personally conducting the operations in the trenches at Antwerp. Referring to the battle of Suwalki, the Petrograd correspondent of The Times states that it is destined to live in history as one of the fiercest of the war, and aiso as the most important, in view of the numbers engaged and the results achieved. The moral effects of the Russian victory are incalculable. A Russian system of selfgovernment has been installed in Galicia, and is reported to be succeeding. Even the Jews are returning to Eemberg, the capital. The German system of coaling her warships in war-time has been revealed. It appears that it has been accomplished through, secret agents in Capetown, New York, and Chicago. 4An Italian manifesto to the Italian Government begs for help against the Austrians whose actions are arousing the popular passion in Italy. Nearly 600,000 men have joined Earl Kitchener’s new army. Japanese bluejackets have seized Jaluit, the seat of government of the Marshall Islands. The fortifications, arms, and ammunition were captured, and British ships in port were released.
It is stated that the Union troops in South Africa are entering upon the campaign there against formidable forces.
