ARMED MERCHANT VESSELS.

According to the Admiralty Monthly Orders, issued in August, the number of merchant vessels “armed for self-defence” is thirtynine, aud four more are completing. The White Star Line has 11 armed ships, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company 10, Messrs Hpulder Brothers two, British and Argentine §team Navigation Company three, the Wilson Line three, Federal Steam Navigation Company two, £>haw, Savill and Albion Company two, Aberdeen Line three, New Zealand Shipping Company two, Scottish Shire Line one. In relation to the immense number of British steamships the number armed is not imposing. Unlike the German armed merchantmen, the object ot British armed vessels is not that they should be transformed into vessels of war for commerce destruction. British armed merchantmen do not fight unless they are attacked.
