HOCKEY.
GREEN CUP GOES SOUTH
Bully off. Five hits ia five seconds, Otaki one goal, was the record five seconds after the commencement of the match between Moutoa and Otaki on the Levin park domain on Wednesday. It was sudden, and Moutoa felt cold ’and clammy, like a man who unexpectedly finds himself on the edge of a precipice. The northern team tried to pull itself together, but just as it had about collected its wits and courage, Otaki upset matters by scoring another goal. Moutoa did its best to induce Otaki to remain at its own end of the field, but Otaki was obstinate and self-willed and intimated that they preferred to stay at Moutoa end —and they did, and scored two more goals in rapid succession, Moutoa tried to go to the
Otakl end, and found that„the old saying to the effect that it Is easy to go down-hill does not apply in all cases, at any rate while the Otaki hockey team is in the way. Accordingly Moutoa sat back in its goal with a “come one come all” expression on its face. Bike a shot the ball came straight into the goal. It was a splendid goal. From the corner Bright passed it to Rawiri in front of the goal, he stopped it, stepped aside, and Kehu scored the goal. It was the best bit of hockey seen on the domain this season. Moutoa probably felt worse, anyway they looked it, looked like the man who had been held by one and his pockets gone through by another. Otaki had no time to score again in the first half, and it ended Otaki 5 goals, Moutoa o. The second half opened quietly. Moutoa appeared apprehensive as to the size of the score Otaki might put up, while on the other baud Otaki seemed satisfied to retire on its fortune and go for a cruise in a steam yacht. Presently Moutoa woke up, and setting up a good attack scored a goal. Encouraged, they made several more tries, but Otaki kept them off and found time to call on their goalkeeper. For the sixth time the ball came too quick and rested in the net. Eater, it came more slowly, and he stopped it. Eoose play up and down the field followed, but no further score was made, and the game ended Olaki 6, Moutoa x. The first half, though one-sided, was worth watching ; the second half was as tame as a pet rabbit and not half as interesting. At the conclusion Otaki went off to draw up plans and specifications for a show case for the silver cup, and Moutoa felt in its pocket for a stray sixpence to buy au enamelled mug. Messrs C. 11. Nicolsou aud C. H. Judd were the referees. —Horcwhenua Chronicle.
