PATRIOTIC ESSAYS.
BY LOCAL STATE SCHOOL CHILDREN. Some time ago, Mr Poynton, S.M., delivered a very instructive and patriotic address to the pupils attending the local State school. At its conclusion, Mr Poynton generously offered three prizes for essays based on his address, and to be adjudged by himself. Twenty-three competed. The first prize was won by Sarah Henderson (St. V.), the second by Cecil Lawton (St. VI.) and the third by Austin Charles (St. VI.) In his remarks on the essays, Mr Poynton says : “ The essays show that my remarks at the ceremony of saluting the school-flag were closely followed, and the important points remembered by nearly all of the competitors. Owing to the fair average merit of the papers, there was some difficulty in deciding which were the prize winners.” We shall publish the essays of the prize winners in our next issue. The head-teacher and committee desire to tender their thanks to Mr Poynton for his kindness in delivering the address at a few hours’ notice, and for his interest in the welfare of the school.
