WAR NEWS.

The Austrian Army has been crushingly defeated by the Russians at Dublin, Russian Poland, and the great Austrian fortress at Cracow has been evacuated. The Austrian troops are becoming demoralised, and there are wholesale desertions. The fall of Breslau is report ed as imminent. The objective of the main Russian force is Berlin, German reinforcements are being hurried forward to oppose the Russian advance. In France, the Allied line is slowly and steadily pressing back the line of the Invaders. In the north, the Belgian Army has made a vigorous and successful sortie from Antwerp. The presence of the enemy in northern Belgium is causing considerable alarm, and the Dutch Government has ordered certain towns in Holland to be put in a state of siege. During the critical and trying retreat from Mons, when French reinforcements were unavailable, the British Army was in desperate straits, and had literally to fight for its very existence, and only by desperate and heroic valour did our troops escape annihilation by overwhelming masses of the Germans. In the British House of Commons, Mr Asquith, the Prime Minister, warmly seconded by Mr Bonar Daw, Deader of the Opposition, has declared the Government’s intention to put 1,200,000 men in the field, and see the business right through. In South Africa, General Botha has delivered a stirring speech of loyalty, and his expressed determination to use all possible efforts to assist the Empire in the hour of need, which evoked cheers in the Union Parliament.
