WAR NEWS.
Reports, substantially confirmed,'state that large numbers of Russians have arrived in the western theatre of war.
One message states that 250,000 have arrived in France, whilst another message mentions Ostend. It is probable that large forces may have arrived in both places. They are said to have travelled by the White Sea to Scotland, thence through England and across the Channel. The news of the fighting in France is satisfactory from the Allies point of view. It is officially reported that the Allies are making continuous progress from the banks of the Ourcq. The enemy are retreating in the direction of the Marne. General Joffre’s plans are being steadily carried out and the Allies are acting on the offensive. The Russians have occupied Nikolaieff and the Austrians are in full retreat. Russia is experiencing great difficulty in disposing of her 82,000 Austrian prisoners. A serious controversy has arisen between the Kaiser and the Imperial Chancellor and Minister for Foreign Affairs. These two Ministers are being indicted for having nearly all the European States combining against Germany. In England 30,000 men are recruiting daily. Germans are streaming from Liege towards Germany.
