WAR NEWS.
Operations of the German and Allied forces have now reached a critical phase. Recent battles were fought with frightful carnage in the ranks of the Germans. The German army are being manoeuvred into a difficult position. The Allied armies are now standing fast being flanked with strong supports. Russian forces are marching steadily forward, and the arrival of fugitives in the German capital is causing consternation. The naval engagement in the North Sea, off Heligoland bight, was a magnificent piece of British naval daring. Three German cruisers, the Ariadne, Koln and Mainz were destroyed. Very little damage was done to the British destroyers and cruisers engaged. German Samoa was surrendered to the British on Saturday, and the New Zealand advance Expeditionary Force were landed, and took possession. OFFICIAL NEWS. The High Commissioner reports from London, August 31st, 6,40 a.m. The French Embassy states that the left wing of the Allies has taken the offensive and driven the Prussian guards back to Guise. Heavy fighting is reported south west of Mezieres, due to the advance under the Crown Prince. The French take the offensive at Lorraine. Enemy have pushed back intact the Allied line from Sambre to the Somme river and have overrun north east France with cavalry. The Russians are approaching fortresses of Thorn and Grandenz, Austrians have invaded Russian Poland, and are advancing towards Lublin.
