FOXTON A. (3) v. SHANNON (2).
What promised to be an uninteresting and one sided game at Shannon finally developed into one of the most exciting tussles of the season. Foxton pressed continually in the first half but were unable to score. In the second half things improved considerably and Bryant who was playing a great game, scored twice in a few minutes. All the other forwards had half-a-dozen shots each, but some marvellous work on the part of the Shannon goal-keeper kept the score down. With a quarter of an hour to go the yellows evened up the score with two fine goals. From then on the game was one of the fastest this season. Again and again the white forwards, with splendid combination, took the ball into the circle, but the goal-keeper either saved or the shots went wide. Minute after minute went by and still the score was two all. At last just as the whites were fearfully awaiting the sound of the whistle, Baughen sent in a beauty that beat the goal-keeper and won the match 30 seconds before time. Mr Broughton refereed. LADIES MATCHES. TUI (2) v. WHARANGI (1). A very scrappy but nevertheless keenly fought game, resulted in a win for Tui by 2to 1. Scorers for Tui were Misses M. King and C. Lumsden, while Miss V. Morgan scored for Wharangi. Mr N. Bryant referred. AWAHOU v. SCHOOL.' A very interesting game took place between Awahou and School in the final for the Gillespie Cup. This was easily the best game the Awahous have yet put up and at one period it looked as if they stood a good chance of winning. However, the superior combination of the School players enabled them to snatch victory from their larger opponents by 2 goals to 1. From the commencement both sides made the game very willing, but School had much the better of things and had hard luck in not scoring on several occasions. Over-eagerness on the part of the forwards resulted in their being penalised for “off-side” once or twice. Prominent among the School forwards during the first spell were Stella Barber and Eileen Cummerfield, and on the left wing Amy Powell. Awahou were obliged to save at the expense of corners several times, but good play on the part of the Misses Cook and Alzdorf changed the scene of play to the other end. Through the ball rising ,Hine Spring received a hard knock on the face, but very pluckily continued playing. Half time came with School pressing and no score for either side. School “warmed up” during the second spell, and from a bit of good play by the backs, among whom Hine Spring and Maggie Reid were noticeable, Gladys McSavney notched a goal from a scramble. Some give and take play followed and from a tight piece of play about the halfway line Miss H. Cook broke away and scored a fine goal for Awahou, From the “bully off” Awahou again came with a rush and School were obliged to save at the expense of a corner, but good work by Eva Thompson prevented a score. Misses M. Walker and V. McSavney were playing well ior Awahous during this part of the game. Things looked bad for School just at this period, when Winnie Walls, by a fine bit of play brought the ball almost the length ot the field and centred. Stella Barber and Gladys McSavney got it in turn and it went then to Amy Powell, who scored a pretty goal. This was the best bit of play during the match and the spectators applauded. The game ended shortly afterwards with School pressing strongly. Stella Barber played well for School, though all were good ; and for Awahou Miss H. Cook was most prominent in this much improved team. Messrs H. F, Gabites and R. Ashmore controlled the game. By defeating Awahou, School hold the Gillespie Cup for the ensuing year. The positions of the teams are as follow :
School scored 31 goals, while only 4 have been scored against them.
School Played. Won. Lost. Pts 6 6 o 12 Awahou 6 4 2 8 Tui 6 2 4 4 Wharaogi 6 o 6 0
