The Mayor has received the following circular letter from Leiut-Colonel Hughes, commandthe 7th Regiment: “ General Sir Arthur Godley has suggested that it would be a good thing if it could be arranged for the Commander of each squadron and company ot the Expeditionary Force, to be provided with a small fund for the use of their men while away. This is an excellent idea, as a means to provide necessaries tor the sick or anything required for emergencies during service abroad. The fund would be placed in the hands of Major Cunningham who commands the company of the 7th Regiment drawn from the districts of Wanganui, Hunterville, Marton, Fellding, Palmerston* North, Levin, Foxton and Otaki, and disbursed by him for the necessities of the men as urgency required. It is proposed to raise a fund of ,£l5O equal to 10s per man (300 men) or if possible say £1 per man. The company being drawn from the districts above named it is suggested the minimum amount raised in each district be as follows: — Wanganui £SO, Palmerston, £3O, Feilding ,£2O, Marton and Hunterville ,£2O, Taihape ,£is> Foxton, Levin and Otaki ,£ls. It is further suggested that these amounts be taken from the subscriptions already given. If your committee would consent to assist in raising this sum, or more if required, would you please forward any sums subscribed to the undersigned who will forward the amount to Major Cunningham and acknowledge the same. As time is short a speedy reply will facilitate matters. I need hardly dilate further on the necessity of such a fund as you yourself sir, will see the usefulness of it, Our youth and manhood are giving themselves up for the service of our country, and cannot we help them on their way with a few necessities ?” The Mayor has replied stating that Foxton will contribute £ls to the fund and this amount has been forwarded on to Lieut.Colonel Hughes,
