Japan has declared war on Germany. Influential Italians expect that Italy will join the Entente within a week. The Germans are marching in considerable force towards Lille, cutting all communication along their flank; especially in the direction of Antwerp. It is reported that a big battle is progressing in the Belgian province of Haiuant, following a sanguinary encounter at Lille. One report states that only two of the Liege forts still hold out, but another states that all the forts are holding out. Half a million allies occupy a triangle, the apex of which is Namur on the one side and Charleroi and Monis on the other. The German Zeppelin, No. S, has been shot down near Badonviller. The Servians routed 110,000 Austrians near the River Driua. The Russians defeated three German Army Corps at Gumbinnen. The Austrians repelled the Russian cavalry north of Lemberg. The Emperor of Austria is critically ill. The following cable message has been received by the Prime Minister from the High Commissioner ;—London, Aug. 24th, 4 p.m. Official. The British forces were engaged all Sunday and Sunday night in the neighbourhood of Mons and held their ground. The Germans have taken the first line of defence at Namur, necessitating the withdrawal of portion of the allied troops from Hue from Sambre to the.original defensive position on fthe French frontier.
