SHOCKING CRUELTY TO HORSES.

WELL-MERITED PUNISHMENT. At Feilding S.M. Court yesterday morning Edward Moran was charged with neglecting to provide sufficient food and shelter for four horses and with cruelty to a horse. To the first charge he pleaded not guilty and to the second guilty. The four horses were in the Court yard, and were inspected by the Court. They were in a frightful condition. All of them had shocking, cruel wounds on the backs and long spur marks on their sides. They were in a pitiably starved stare, and such a collection of suffering horseflesh has never been seen before in this locality. Moran stated on oath he had bad one horse on trial since July 22nd and had ridden it once ; one he bought at the Feilding pound a month ago ; another was suffering from lampers and red worm and could not be fattened. , The Magistrate said it was a case of hideous cruelty. The big brown horse had been ridden within the last month, and to ride a horse in such a condition was scandalous. The horse would have to be destroyed. It was the grossest cruelty to use it, and it was astonishing that a man could be so inhuman. A tine of would be imposed for cruelty, and on the other charge Moran would be convicted and discharged. A default of three mouths would accompany the sentence, defendant being given two months to pay. Moran was ordered to pay 21s solicitor’s fee and 10s witness’s expenses.—Star.
