No news is allowed to come through the English Press Bureau regarding the movements of the allied armies operating against the Austro-German advance.
Liege still holds out. French territory has been cleared of all but the negligible elements of German invasion.
, Austrian troops are believed to be in Alsace, while Lorraine is reported to be but poorly held by the Germans.
The presence of German troops is reported beyond Liege.
The “Times” correspondent reveals elaborate dispositions of the huge armies which the Kaiser proposes to launch upon the French frontier and it is reported that over one million Germans are marching on the French frontier.
Stupendous events are close at hand. A flotilla of German submarines was routed by the British cruisers, and one of the submarines was sunk by the splendid gunnery of H.M.S. Birmingham. In England the national bearing is one of calm fortitude, there is a steadying of commercial nerves, food routes by sea are being cautiously re-opened, and some of the banks are paying out in gold. Yesterday at Wellington the first section of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force marched through the city to the waterfrout, to embark ou the troopships, which subsequently moved out into the stream. The Goeben and Breslau have taken refuge in the Dardanelles.
It is reported that three German cruisers are at Samoa.
Italy is strictly neutral. Germany publishes successes against Russian troops on the Eastern border. Thousands are enlisting daily throughout Great Britain.
In the House yesterday the Prime Minister said that he believed would be raised towards the expense of the Expeditionary Force by way of donations and local efforts-
The Government intends te validate local bodies contributions to the Empire Defence Fund.
From to-night the lights at Pencarrow Head, Godley Head, Taiaroa Head and Cape Foulwind lighthouses will be extinguished, and the Wellington, Dunedin, Auckland, Lyttelton, and Westport Harbour Boards have been requested to extinguish all seaward harbour lights. Many gifts of motor cars and cycles have been made.
