TOWN CLERK’S REPORT.
The Town Clerk reported at last night’s Council meeting as follows ; “I have to report that the road staff have been engaged as under since last meeting, viz., spreading metal in Avenue and (In ion streets, cleaning round trees in Clyde, Iffddel and Park streets, pegging off and putting in concrete kerb, and grading channel* in Park street, putting in culvert and approaches on Saudon road, cleaning channels in Main street, putting shingles on cemetery shed. Patching boles in roads will be proceeded with as metal comes to hand. On July 20th. a meeting of the Public Works Committee was held in Park street, when the following were present: His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Chrystall, Henderson, Kempster, Read, Whibley, Coley, and Freeman. The meeting was called to inspect the proposed line for the kerbing of Park street footpath. The following resolutions were passed, viz., that Mr T. Rimmer be asked to move back his fence on to the proper fence line at once ; that all owners of property whose fences or hedges are encroaching on the footpaths are requested to put same back ou to the proper line ; that, a footpath be made in front of the school, from the headmaster’s residence to the Native cemetery. A further meeting of the Public Works Committee was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday, August 6th, when the following were present, viz., His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Coley, Chrystall, Whibley, and Henderson. The meeting was called mainly to discuss the matter of the Council purchasing a horse and cart for casual work and removing of rubbish from business and private places. After carefully going into the matter as to cost, returns, etc., it was deemed advisable to let the matter stand over till after the expiration of the financial year, and to recommend to the Council that alternate tenders be called for the removal of rubbish for the balance of the unexpired portion of this financial year, (a) for the removal of rubbish from all business premises once a fortnight, and from private premises once a month ; (b) for the removal of rubbish from all business premises once a fortnight, and from private premises once in two months. Owing to a difference of opinion as to the proper fence line in Park and other streets, It was resolved to employ a surveyor to survey tbe following streets where required, viz., Park street, Avenue to Russell street corner, Cook Street, and Coley street. An offer was received from Mr Hillary to plant trees on the west side ot Hillary street, and it was resolved that Mr Hillary’s offer be accepted, such work to be under the supervision of the Town Clerk. In accordance with the instructions that I received re fences and hedges encroaching on the footpaths, I instructed the Inspector, of Nuisances to supply me with a list of all persons so offending, and I have served notices accordingly asking owners to comply with the Council's request, and to keep to the proper fence lines.
