Sir, —I do not desire to heave a brick at the gas manager, because I believe he is doing the best possible with the means at his disposal to give us a good illuminant, but I would respectfully suggest that the Mayor purchase from some wholesale house a quantity of sweet smell, to be pumped through the mains, in order to counteract what one of my lady friends refers to as “that beastly horrible smell, don’t you know, that nearly petrifies me when the gas is turned on at the meter!”—Yours in anticipation, Nasai.
