GOVERNMENT APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED.

LONG AND HONOURABLE PUBLIC CAREERS.

The following are the names of the men to be appointed by his Excellency the Governor as members of the Legislative Council W. Morgan, Gisborne. J. Fisher, Waikato. R. K. Simpson, Marton. J. G. W. Ailken, Wellington. Gilbert Carson, Wanganui. G. McGregor, Dunedin. T. McGibbon, Southland. A. T. Maginaity, Nelson. R. Moote, Kaiapoi. O, Samuel, New Plymouth. Dr. Collins, We ,,: "!' vf on.

The two last named have been re-appointed- The new councillors are, without exception, men who have had a lengthy and honourable career in New Zealand, and who have done much public work on local bodies, charitable organisations, etc. Mr R. K. Simpson is a wellknown Marton farmer, and has been a member of the Rangitikei County Council for over forty years. He is a breeder of prize stock and a model farmer. Mr Fisher is a farmer in the Waikato district, in which he is one of the pioneers. He has been chairman of the County Council for many years, president of the Agricultural aud Pastoral Association, and member of the. Auckland Harbour Board, while he is one of the most popular and highly respected men in the district. Mr Gilbert Carson is well-known for his connection with the Wanganui Chronicle newspaper. He was born at sea, educated in Auckland, served in the Maori war and received the medal. He has done much work on local bodies, and has represented his district in Parliament. He has also been Mayor of Wanganui. Mr John McGregor is a wellknown barrister and solicitor in Dunedin. He is a graduate of the Edinburgh University, aud was for seven years a member of the Legislative Council, but could not see eye to eye with Mr Seddon in his policy, aud so was not reappointed. He was, however, one of the most able and useful members of the Upper House. Mr Aitken has had a long and honourable commercial career. He had been Mayor of Wellington, and served for many years on local and charitable bodies, while he has also represented Wellington in Parliament.

Mr Moore, of Kaiapoi, is one of Canterbury’s pioneers. He has served on local bodies for years, is chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, and sat in Parliament as member lor Kaiapoi. Dr. Collins is a well-known medical practitioner in Wellington. He has taken an active interest in volunteering and defence matters, and he has served one term iu the Legislative Council. Mr Maginnity is an old colonist. Born in Wellington in the early days, he was in the Civil Service, from which he retired in 1887 to practice as a barrister and solicitor. He has been many years a member of the Nelson Education Board, and is a member of the Victoria College Council. He was also a keen volunteer.

Mr Morgan is one of the best known and most highly respected residents of Gisborne. He was in Otago for Some years, has done much good work on local bodies, and taken a keen interest in education.

Mr T. McGtbbon came to New Zealand in 1848, and as a lad shared the pioneering hardships wilh his family in Otago. Later he was a farmer, mail contractor, and storekeeper at Mataura, He has a long record of service as a School Commissioner and on the County Council, Education Board, and other local bodies, of several which he has been chairman. He was several times Mayor of Mataura. At present he represents the Southland Education Board on the Otago University Council. He has also been prominent in business life, an office-bearer in the Mataura Presbyterian Church from its foundation. Mr Samuel is a well-known solicitor of New Plymouth, He was in the House as member for that seat for several years, and was appointed to the Upper House in 1907 by the Ward Administration.
