A PATHETIC STORY.

There recently appeared before the Gravesend Guardians a welldressed elderly lady, named Mrs Mary Higgins, accompanied by a pretty little girl of ten, who asked to be given the custody of another little girl who was in the workhouse.

" She believes T aw he. mother,” ■,.d 1 Mrs i1k,;,.-, red umg to the cuild with hei, “ but in reality I adopted her from Infancy. “ The real mother, Mrs Brenham, mysteriously disappeared eight or nine years ago, and has not been seen since. It is believed that she went to Australia. “ She left behind her this little girl and a younger sister. The younger sister was left in the care of an elderly widow, who in the course of time sent her to the workhouse, and there she has remained ever since.

“ The elder child, Helena, has been brought up in comparative luxury, and I have given her a good education. Occasionally Helena has seen her sister Mary at the workhouse, and she weeps daily for her companionship.” Mr J. A. Whitfield (the workhouse master): Did you not on one occasion, when you visited Mary, tell me she was your daughter’s child ? “No ! God forbid !” replied Mrs Higgins indiguautly. “ Yes, you did,” said the master, with emphasis, “ and the matron will bear me out.”

The guardians decided to make, inquiries before granting the application.
