SCENE IN THE HOUSE.
MR. PAYNE IN TROUBLE.
An exciting incident occurred in the House of Representatives last night. While Mr Robertson held the floor, Mr J. Payne (member lor Grey Lynn) said, applying his words to the Prime Minister: “He sits there by bribery and corruption.” Mr Payne declined to withdraw the words, and the Prime Minister moved that they be taken down. The Opposition at first called for a division, but gave way at the second call.
Mr Payne was ordered to withdraw from the Chamber, and the Prime Minister moved that he be suspended for the rest of the sitting. A long discussion followed. After it had continued for about an hour, it was decided to give Mr Payne another chance to withdraw, but when search was made for him he could not be found. When the Speaker announced this fact there was an outburst of laughter. The Prime Minister gravely rebuked this hilarity, and moved that the matter stand over until next sitting day.
