FORGOTTEN AND NEGLECTED.

THE GRAVE OF THOMAS BRACKEN.

“Not understood, we move along asunder, Our paths grow wider as the seasons creep Along the years ; we marvel and we wonder Why Life is Life ? And then we fall asleep, Not understood.

“Where,” asked the Dunedin Star the other day, “is Tom Bracken buried ? Is he forgotten ?” A few days ago, relates the Star, a visitor asked to see the place of interment, and after much debating as to whether it was in the Southern or in the Northern Cemetery, and some turning up of yellowing documents, the grave was found in the Cemetery in Dunedin. marks the spot. The mound has fallen in. The surface is overrun with weeds. The facts are humiliating. Need we say more ? The above paragraph was reprinted in the Dominion on Monday morning, and on Tuesday Mr Jas. B. Speed and Mr F. W. Man-, ton called at the Dominion office with a suggestion that a fund should be raised in order that the neglect of the past might be repaired, and the last resting place of the New Zealand poet marked with fitting distinction. It was a disgrace, they said, indignantly, that not even a stone marked the spot where the man who wrote “Not Understood” lies buried.

They followed up their suggestion, with a donation of ios each. Further subscriptions to the fund may be paid at the Dominion office, and in the meantime steps will be taken by those interested to form a committee to take control of the movement.
