A very pleasing ceremony took place in the Mayor’s room at the Council Chambers this morning, when a number of citizens assembled to make a presentation to Mr and Mrs Chas. Collins and bid them farewell. In the unavoidable absence of the Mayor, Mr Hornblow was asked to preside. He stated that Mr Collins had kept his departure so quiet that it was not known until yesterday morning that he intended to leave Foxton to-morrow. Several citizens deedied that they could not allow him to depart without a word of farewell and something tangible as a token of their esteem. The list was closed and the presentations purchased before an opportunity was afforded the general public of joining in, and there would be keen disappointment expressed by a large number of people when the facts became known. Mr Hornblow referred to the fact that Mr Collins, like his respected mother, was a native of the town. He referred to Mr Collins’ genial and unassuming manner and uprightness of character in business and private life, and wished Mr and Mrs Collins on behalf of those present, prosperity in their new home. He then handed Mr Collins a travelling rug and Mrs Collins a set of silver-mounted cut glass toilet requisites. Messrs Perreau and Bullard also endorsed the previous speaker’s remarks. Mr Collins suitably responded on behalf of himself and wife. Mr and Mrs Collins leave Foxton to-morrow for Te Rehunga, Hawke’s Bay, where they intend to settle on a dairy farm.
