HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A well-attended committee meeting of the above was held on Tuesday evening, for the purpose of electing a President, vice Mr Vi itchell, and to make arrangements for the forthcoming Bulb Show. Mr Stiles (vice-president), presided. The following committee was appointed to draw up the catologue for the Bulb Show : Mrs Greig, Misses Ross and Speirs, Messrs Bullard, Hornblow and Jackson. It was decided that the sub-committee meet on Friday evening. Some discussion took place re fixing the date for the Bulb Show. It was finally decided to hold the show in the Town Hall on Tuesday, August 25th. Wednesday was favoured, but owing to the ball being engaged that day, the former day was decided on. Mr Rhodes was appointed judge of pot plants and cut blooms, and Mrs Rhodes, decorative, It was decided that the scale ot prizes and entry fees as for previous bulb shows be adopted. Mr Stiles was unanimously elected President, and his final consent was received with applause. The following sub-com-mittee was appointed to draw up the spring and autumn schedules : Mesdames Greig, Woods, Miss Ross, Messrs Whibley, Newth and Lumsden, Mrs Greig to be convenor. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to the Band for their past assistance and offer of help in the future. It was resolved that in the event of only one entry in any section, a merit card be given, two entries a prize of one shilling, and four entries a second prize of sixpence. It was decided that all entry fees, except where otherwise provided, be sixpence. Other minor matters were discussed aud the meeting rose.

The society is to be congratulated upon having secured the services of Mr Stiles as president, and we feel sure he will make a worthy successor to those gentlemen who have previously filled the position. The new president has been a generous supporter of the institution from its inception, and is a keen horticulturist. Upon the shoulders of the president and secretary the success of the society, in a large measure, depends and past presidents have found the honoured position anything but a sinecure, Mr Stiles is a busy business man and possibly the hardest worked public man in the community, and his acceptance of the position means a further sacrifice of his time. He has a backing, however, of one of the most enthusiastic committees it would be possible to find in any community, and a well seasoned and experienced secretary, so that this important institution should make further progress under his guidance.
