IMPRISONMENT FOR LIFE.
GERALDINE MURDER CASE. Timaru, June 10. The Geraldine murder case occupied the Court all day. The jury after J hours’ retirement at 10p.m., returned a verdict of manslaughter. The evidence for the prosecution was the same as at the inquest. The defence offered was that the blows were struck under provocation a Ki. iu self -defence, and also that of imbecility. Accused, Cripps, swore that Stevenson struck him first. Four doctors were called. Two considered Cripps imbecile, and two considered him a degenerate, but that he would know right from wrong. Other witnesses stated that Cripps was stupid as a boy and youth, and that Stevenson was cantankerous and difficult to get on with.
The Judge said accused ought not to be at large again, and sentenced Cripps to imprisonment with hard labour for life.
