OROUA DOWNS.

SCHOOL CONCERT.

The Oroua Downs School Committee have expended a fair sum of money on improving their school grounds, but more of the needful is required for this deserving purpose. A concert was held in Hammond’s Hall last night to supplement the fund, and the building was crowded with settlers and their families. Mr Witton presided. The programme was mainly filled by Foxton performers, supplemented with some nicely executed action songs by the school children. Nearly all the items were vociferously encored, the children demanding their full measure of the “bill-o’-fare.” The following contributed Instrumental, Misses Jenks and Cook, Messrs Simmons and Betty, and Mr W. and Miss Annie Conlan; quartette, Mrs Boyes and Miss Signal, Messrs Barr and Signal: duets, Messrs Buglass and Jenks ; vocal solos, Mesdames Boyes, Greig, Metcalf. Misses Signal and Brady, Messrs Barr, Buglass, Signal, Hornblow, and Witton, and recitations by Miss Burling and Mr Hornblow. The scarf drill by the school girls and action song by the juniors were keenly appreciated, and gave evidence of careful training. At the conclusion the chairman briefly returned thanks to the performers for their services, and referred to the Committee’s work in improving the school grounds. He called for three cheers for the performers, which were heartily given. Mr Hornblow briefly replied. Mr Raikes proposed a vote of thanks to the Chairman, which was carried by cheers. The visitors were hospitably entertained at supper by the Committee. The piano was kindly lent by Mr Scott, upon whom a large share of the organisation devolved, also to the Chairman, Mr Hoolihan, Mr Raikes, and Mrs Scott and Miss McKenzie. After the concert, the room was cleared and dancing indulged in. The music was supplied by Mr Conlan and son an Mr Christensen officiated as The ladies provided an abundanceof refreshments.

The following are the names of the children who took part in the scarf drill: Annie Conlan, Renie Moffatt, Kitty Brady, Rose Davey, Florrie and Charlotte Hartley, Mona Scott, Madge Burling, Lizzie and Kathie Houlihan, Eva Davey and Nellie Conlan.
