THE GAS WORKS.

During the month of May the amount of gas manufactured at the local works was 380,000 ft,, which with amount in holder on May Ist, 4000 ft., gives a total of 384.000 ft. The amount sold to consumers for lighting was 182.000 ft. and for power and cooking 135,000 ft., 30,000 ft. was used in the street lamps, 27,000 ft. in the works and manager’s house and 3000 ft. was in holder on June Ist, leaving 7000 ft. unaccounted for. Thirty-three tons of coal was carbonised yielding 11,515 ft. per ton. The earnings totalled ,£137 10s qd, made up of gas sales ,£129 5s yd, tar 7s 6d, coke £3 16s Qd, fittings £2 15s sd, meter rent 9s 6d, weighing 16s. The expenditure was £124 19s id, made up of coal £39 12s, wages £54 15s 3d, working expenses £4 8s 6d, fittings £2 15s 3d, plant £1 18s, tools £1 8s 2d, pipes £6 2S 1 id, meters £9 lis and printing and advertising £4 Bs.

There was some discussion on the above report, 'particularly in reference to the amount of wages paid, and it was eventually decided on the motion of Cr Chrystall, seconded by Cr Henderson, that the gas manager and an assistant do all the work in connection with the gas works, including work on mains at present laid and services installed and all new services, with the exception of street lighting and laying of new mains.
